Charles Lightoller

Charles Lightoller

Born Charles Herbert Lightoller in Chorley, Lancashire. He joined the White Star Line in 1900 and served on several ships before being appointed second officer on the Titanic. As the ship was abandoned, he was stricter than most in applying the 'women and children first' rule for boarding the lifeboats. He was nearly drowned when he was sucked beneath the water, but was blasted back to the surface by a burst of hot air. He and about thirty others survived by balancing on an overturned lifeboat for several hours before being rescued. He was portrayed by Kenneth More in the 1958 film ''.
