Charles Macklin

Actor and playwright. Probably born in County Donegal, Ireland in about 1699. Lived in Bow Street.. Died at home in Tavistock Row.

Performed extensively at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Macklin revolutionised theatre in the 18th century by introducing a "natural style" of acting.

In the Scene Room of this theatre in 1735 he accidentally killed a fellow actor, Thomas Hallam, during a fight over a wig. Macklin thrust his cane through Hallam's eye, into his brain. This happened in front of many witnesses;  Macklin was tried for murder, conducted his own defence, and escaped with manslaughter.
