Henry Condell

Fellow actor and friend of William Shakespeare and John Heminge.

Heminge and Condell had been co-partners with Shakespeare in the Globe Theatre. On his death the plays existed only in the form of the scripts used by the actors. Heminge and Condell decided to gather all these manuscripts together, edit and publish them. These are the famous Shakespeare First Folio, published in 1623, without which we would have no Juliet, no Bottom and no Hamlet.

Henry Condell lived in the parish of St Mary Aldermanbury for at least 30 years. He had 9 children, 8 of whom were baptized here and 6 buried. He was buried here December 29 1627. He and his wife are also buried here.
