Charles W. Toms

Charles W. Toms

One of the Deacons at the Wandsworth chapel who provided lectures and popular entertainments during the week for the working classes. Active in 1883. Is it possible that he could be the Charles W. Toms who was a partner in Derry and Toms, the department store in Kensington High Street? Another Deacon, "Mr. J. Toms of Kensington and Enfield" gave an expensive pulpit to the East Hill church. Looking likely, isn't it? Incidentally, have done some great work examining the Art Deco Derry and Toms building.

And even more off-topic, the splendid has a post with Derry and Toms graphic ads from the 1920s/30s. Lovely.

The Derry and Toms roof garden, open to the public 1938-2018, is used as a location in the 1964 film Ring of Spies - the views over London are impressive.
