Clapham Common deep shelter

This was one of several deep shelters built under Northern Line underground stations during WW2. See The Drum for more information.

The Blitz was over by the time this shelter was completed so instead it was used as a hostel for American troops, and then as accommodation for government staff. After the war it was closed for many years, until in 2016 it became a hydroponic farm. Here salad vegetables are grown in recycled carpet material; the process using 70% less water than open field farming, and is also pesticide free.
