Commonwealth of England

Following the Civil War and the 1649 execution of Charles I, England and Wales (and later Ireland and Scotland) were governed as a republic with Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector. The monarchy in the form of Charles II was restored in 1660. The period without a monarch is also called the interregnum.
