Copenhagen Running Grounds

Former athletics track in Garratt Lane, at Althorp Lodge. Opened by Robert Sadler as the New Surrey Pedestrian Ground. Renamed in 1861, presumably to reflect the different types of competitions taking place. Closed in 1864, at least partly due to the rowdiness of the spectators.

Pedestrianism, competitive walking, was a popular form of spectator sport in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and was the precursor of what is now called racewalking.
