Mayor of Ealing, 1974 - 75. We found reference to him as a Councillor in 1964 and 65.
Our colleague, Andrew Behan, states that Arthur William Surry was born on 3 May 1920 in Hampstead, London, the second of the four children of Frederick Frank Surry (1889-1972) and Alice Maud Surry née Dicks (1897-1980). His birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1920 in the Pancras Registration District, London. On 30 May 1920 he was baptised in St Martin's Church, Vicar's Rd, London, NW5, where in the baptismal register his family were shown to be residing at 47 Wellesley Road, London, NW5.
He was shown on the census return form that was completed by his father on 19 June 1921 as aged 1 year, 2 months, living in two rooms within 36 Cobourg Street, London, NW1, with his parents and his brother Frederick Frank Surrey (1918-1990). His father described himself as temporary postman employed by the Post Office at their London North Western District Office, Eversholt Street, London, NW1.
His two younger siblings were: Albert Edward Surry (b.1926) and Alice Lilian Surry (b.1934)
Electoral registers in 1946 show him listed in the military service section as residing at 181 Leighton Avenue, London, NW5. However, in 1950 he was listed as an ordinary voter at this address along with his parents, his sister and an Anneliese Agnes G. Surry. They were all listed there in 1951 together with his brother, Albert Edward Surry who was shown as a Service Voter.
From 1951 to 1959 he and Anneliese Agnes Surry were shown in electoral registers at 12 Kennet Road, London, W9. He was listed at this address in telephone directories in 1952 and 1953 as a sewing machine mechanic, but from 1954 to 1959 as just an agent. From 1962 electoral registers list him and Anneliese Agnes Surry at 9a Beechwood Avenue, Greenford, Middlesex (now Greater London).
His death was registered as aged 78 years in December 1998 in the Ealing Registration District, Greater London.
He is commemorated as 'COUNCILLOR A. W. SURRY MAYOR 1974-75' on a plaque at the foot of a tree in Walpole Park, near to the entrance at Lammas Park Gardens, London, W5.
