Jubal Webb

Jubal Webb

Co-churchwarden of Mary Abbots Church, Kensington, June 1879. We don't normally expect to find anything about churchwardens but this man has left a, slightly unsavoury trail. He was a cheesemonger, local politician and property developer. He lived at 2 The Terrace,a disparate row of about a dozen houses on the south side of Kensington High Street. In the 1890s he redeveloped the whole Terrace into The Promenade, now 129-163 Kensington High Street.

The has 2 incidental photos of him, one with the giant cheese with which he generated some publicity. The picture source gives two incidents where he was on the wrong end of legal proceedings, one of them for attempted extortion. The cheese wasn't the only bad smell.
