Councillor Mrs Beatrice Lilian Tate

Councillor Mrs Beatrice Lilian Tate

(41 Southern Grove, E3) has researched their namesake and it is there we found this photo, captioned: "Beatrice Lilian Tate, Mayor of Bethnal Green 1952-53 (centre); Henry Edward Tate (left); and Dorothy M Saunders (right), daughter of Beatrice and Henry and Mayoress of Bethnal Green. Photo courtesy of Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives."  Beatrice is wearing the Mayor's chain of office so we read the caption to mean that Dorothy served in the supporting role of Mayoress when her mother was the serving Mayor.

Born in Shoreditch as Beatrice Lilian Line. In 1918 she married Henry Edward Tate and moved to Bethnal Green. Served on the Bethnal Green Metropolitan Council 1934-65. Was Mayor 1952-3, and Deputy Mayor in the following year. She was also Mayoress when her husband was Mayor 1934-6 and 1949-50. Served 4 terms on the LCC April 1949-61.

In 1937 Councillor on the Bethnal Green Housing Committee.  In 1952 Councillor and Mayor of Bethnal Green, JP, LCC, on the Housing Committee.
