Andrew Behan has kindly provided this research: Cyril John Hawthorn was born 23 April 1909, the third of the four sons of Elwin Hawthorn (1877-1947) and Ellen Elizabeth Hawthorn née Silk (1881-1970). His father was a safety match composition maker.
The 1911 census shows the family living at 10 Spanby Road, Bow, but, electoral registers from 1920 inform that the family had moved to 11 Rounton Road, Bow. The 1939 England and Wales Register confirms that the family were still living at the same address and that his father was both a general labourer and an A.R.P. Warden. He was recorded as being a single man, a clerk and also an A.R.P. Stretcher Bearer.
He died, aged 31 years, on 18 September 1940 when a high explosive bomb fell on Saunders Ness Road School, Isle of Dogs, London, E.14, that was being used as Auxiliary Fire Service Sub Station No.35U. He is also commemorated in the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour, located near St. George's Chapel in Westminster Abbey.
