David Benveniste

A member of the congregation at the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue Holland Park, a civilian killed by enemy action in WW2.

David Benveniste was born on 15 July 1893, the son of Albert Benveniste.

He married Esther Samuel (1898-1983) in the 1st quarter of 1922 in the London City Registration District. Their son, Albert David Benveniste (1923-2022) was born on 24 April 1923 and his birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1923 in the Hammersmith Registration District, London.

The London Post Office Directory from 1930 to 1941 lists him as Benveniste, David, embroiderer, 8 White's Row, Spitalfields, London, E1.

He was listed in the England and Wales Register that was compiled on 29 September 1939 as David Benveniste, a married male whose date of birth was recorded as 15 July 1893, a master embroiderer, living at 31 Poplar Grove, London, W6, with his wife.

Probate records confirmed that his address remained as 31 Poplar Grove, London, W6. He was believed to have been killed through war operations at 31 Poplar Grove on 11 May 1941 and whose dead body was found on 11 May 1941. Administration of his estate was granted on 23 September 1941 to his widow and his effects totalled £286-7s-6d. His death was registered as aged 48 years in the 2nd quarter of 1941 in the Hammersmith Registration District. His in Margravine Cemetery, Margravine Gardens, London, W6.

He is shown as 'DAVID BENVENISTE' on the Holland Park Synagogue WW2 memorial, attached to the Holland Park Sephardi Synagogue, 8 St James's Gardens, London, W8. He is also commemorated on the which shows his date of death as 10 May 1941 and on the  located in Westminster Abbey.
