Doris Rosina Button

Doris Rosina Button was born on 9 June 1922, the eldest of the three children of Henry James Button (1900-1960) and Florence Rosina Button née Furniaux (1901-1940). Her birth was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1922 in the Bethnal Green Registration District, London. She was baptised on 25 June 1922 at St Paul's Church, Virginia Road, Bethnal Green, where the baptismal register confirms her date of birth, that her family lived at 52 Gibraltar Walk, Bethnal Green and that her father was a wood turner.

Her two siblings were: Henry George Button (1926-2002) and Ronald Charles Button (1933-1940).

The 1939 England & Wales Register that also confirms her date of birth shows her as a dressing gown cutter living at 45 Satchwell Road, Bethnal Green, with her father who was described as a milk roundsman.

She was injured when a bomb was dropped on the Columbia Market air raid shelter on the night of 7th/8th September 1940 and died later on 8 September 1940 at St Leonard's Hospital, Shoreditch. Her death was registered as aged 18 years in the 3rd quarter of 1940 in the Shoreditch Registration District, London.

Her body was  on 19 September 1940 in , Sebert Road, London, E7 0NP, together with her mother Florence Rosina Button and her brother Ronald Charles Button, who were also killed by the same bomb.

She is shown as 'Doris Button, aged 18 years' on the Columbia Market air raid shelter memorial in the Rose Garden, Old Market Square, Ravenscroft Park, London, E2.

She is also commemorated on the , on the  which shows the date of her death incorrectly as 7 September 1940 and in  that is kept just outside the entrance to St George's Chapel at the west end of Westminster Abbey.
