Comic opera set in rural Kent in 1740. The plot surrounds the Squire's daughter, Dorothy and her cousin Lydia, who, tired of the social rounds, decide to pose as villagers during the festival of the Hop Pole. It played for 931 performances, breaking every London long-run record.

Poet and dramatist, born Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Moved into Bolton House with her mother and sister in 1791 and lived there until her death. Buried at nearby St John's church, Church Row.
Richard D'Oyly Carte founded the business. Married Helen. Their son Rupert inherited the business and passed it on to his daughter, Bridget.
