Awarded the VC for his heroism on 26 August 1914, age 31, while serving in the Royal Field Artillery. "Through determination and personal example he got his guns to safety in the face of the enemy advance, an act of extreme gallantry. (Le Cateau, France)". Freemason at: â„–2998, Kitchener Lodge.
