Douglas Walter Belcher, VC

Soldier. Born Douglas Walter Belcher in Surbiton. He enlisted at the beginning of WW1 and fought at the second Battle of Ypres. Whilst in charge of a portion of breastwork (a temporary fortification), and under heavy bombardment he maintained his position, and opened fire on the enemy who were relatively nearby. His actions almost certainly averted an attack on the flank of one his divisions.

Awarded the VC for his heroism on 13 May 1915, age 25, while serving in the London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade). "By his skill and great gallantry he maintained his position during the day... and averted an attack on the flank. (Ypres, Belgium)". Freemason at: â„–3387, Arts and Crafts Lodge.
