Earl of Halifax

Politician and diplomat. Born Edward Frederick Lindley Wood at Powderham Castle, Devon. He served in parliament from 1910, until he became Lord Irwin in 1925. Viceroy of India from 1926 to 1931. Inherited the title of Viscount Halifax in 1934. He was regarded as one of the architects of the appeasement policy to Hitler. Ambassador to the U.S.A. during World War II. Died at Garrowby Hall, Garrowby, Yorkshire.
