Earl of Mansfield

William David Mungo James Murray, 8th Earl of Mansfield, 7th Earl of Mansfield, DL, JP, styled Lord Scone until 1970, was a British nobleman and Conservative politician. 1985-96 served as First Crown Estate Commissioner.

If you read this stuff carefully you will have noted that Murray was both the 8th Earl of Mansfield AND the 7th Earl of Mansfield. Intrigued by this we tracked back through the Mansfields on and came across: "...while the 1792 earldom (referring to a fictitious Mansfield in Middlesex to differentiate it from the first earldom) was created with remainder to his nephew Lord Stormont." That's enough for us.

The has an obituary describing him as "one of Scotland's richest landowners... a personal friend and regular host to the late Queen Mother and other members of the Royal Family".
