Edmund Matthew Shemeld was born on 18 January 1836 in Woburn, Bedfordshire, the second of the five children of Thomas Shemeld (1806-1864) and Susannah Shemeld née Parsons (1810-1887). He was baptised on 7 February 1836 in Woburn, Bedfordshire and on the baptismal register his date of birth was recorded.
The 1841 census shows him as Edward Shemeld, aged 5 years and living at Doltons Farm, Woburn, with his parents and two siblings: Henry Thomas Shemeld (1838-1916) and Joseph Shemeld (1833-1908). His father was described as an agricultural labourer.
In the 1851 census he is shown as aged 15 years and an errand boy living at 1 New Street, Woburn, with his parents and three siblings: Henry Thomas Shemeld; William Shemeld (1840-1894) - a scholar and Sarah Ann Shemeld (1842-1909) - also a scholar. His father was listed as an agricultural labourer.
On 13 April 1864 he married Mary Bell (1834-1918) in the Parish Church of St Mary, Lambeth Road, Lambeth, Surrey (now Greater London), where in the marriage register he is shown as of full age, a bachelor and a grocer living in Westminster Bridge Road, Lambeth, the son of Thomas Shemeld, a brewer, whilst his wife was described as of full age and a spinster, also residing at Westminster Bridge Road, the daughter of John Bell, deceased.
When the 1871 census was undertaken he was shown as aged 36 years, a grocer and employer of two men, living at 160 Westminster Bridge Road, with his wife, their two children: Annabella Shemeld (1866-1948) and Edmund Thomas Shemeld (1869-1952), together with his two male employees - a grocer's assistant and a grocer's packer along with a female domestic servant.
He was still at the same premises at the time of the 1881 census but it was now listed as 160 Westminster Road, Lambeth. He was described as aged 45 years and a grocer living with his wife, their two children, who were shown as scholars, together with a female domestic servant.
The 1891 census shows him as aged 55 years and still a grocer at 160 Westminster Road, Lambeth, London, with his wife, his son who was a warehouseman and his daughter, together with a female general servant.
He continued in the 1901 census to shown as a grocer, aged 65 years, living at what was now again renamed as 160 Westminster Bridge Road, Lambeth, with his wife, their daughter and a female domestic servant.
Land rates in 1908 assessed the value of his property at £77-0s-0d and at a rate of 21/2d in the pound his rates amounted to 16 shillings.
When he completed his 1911 census return form he described himself as aged 75 years, a shopkeeper and grocer, still living in the eight roomed property at 160 Westminster Bridge Road, Lambeth, with his wife and their daughter, together with a Swiss female domestic servant.
His death was registered as aged 80 years in the 4th quarter of 1916 in the Lambeth Registration District, London. Probate records confirm his address to have been 160 Westminster Bridge Road, Lambeth and that he died on 22 December 1916. The shows that his body was buried on 28 December 1916 in the Lambeth district. Probate was granted on 18 January 1918 to his son, who was a commercial traveller. His effects totalled £844-12s-1d.
He is shown as 'EDMUND M. SHEMELD' on the Hayles Estate - Lambeth memorial stone at 34 Hayles Street, London, SE11. Allegedly, there is according to the , a memorial to him and his wife at Brookwood Cemetery, Glades House, Cemetery Pales, Brookwood, Woking, GU24 0BL.
