Edward Lumbrozo Mocatta

Born London. Treasurer of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews Hospital. One of the Mocatta family but, unlike Frederic David Mocatta, not one of those there's much info on.

Since first publishing this, our colleague Andrew Behan has conducted some research on the man.

Edward Lumbrozo Mocatta was born on 3 March 1865, the fifth of the six children of Abraham Mocatta (1831-1900) and Grace Mendes Mocatta née Da Costa (1834-1884). His birth was registered in the Pancras Registration District, Middlesex (now Greater London).

In the 1881 census he is shown as Edward L. Mocatta, aged 16 years and a scholar, living at 30 Inverness Terrace, Paddington, Middlesex (now Greater London), with his parents and his five siblings: Elkah Ella Mocatta (1859-1935); Charles Abraham Mocatta (1860-1929) - a stockbroker's clerk; Esther Mocatta (1863-1913); Catherine Mocatta (1864-1912) and Leah Mocatta (1867-1911). His father was described as a member of the London Stock Exchange.

On 8 December 1896 he married Flora Gubbay (1870-1915) at the Sha'ar HaShamayim Synagogue, Lauderdale Road, Maida Vale, London.

The 1900 Post Office London Directory lists him as residing at 67 Gloucester Terrace, Paddington and this address is confirmed in the 1901 census where he shown as aged 36 years and a stock jobber living there with his wife and two children: Sibyl Grace Mocatta (1898-1988) and Gladys Elkah Mocatta (1900-1946), together with a cook, a parlourmaid, a housemaid a nurse and an under nurse.

Electoral registers from 1902 to 1909 confirm he was listed at 67 Gloucester Terrace, Paddington, but from 1910 to 1927 he was shown at 93 Westbourne Terrace, Paddington

When he completed his 1911 census return form he described himself as aged 46 and a stock jobber, residing in a 19 roomed property at 93 Westbourne Terrace, Paddington, with his wife and there four children: Sibyl Grace Mocatta - at school; Gladys Elkah Mocatta - at school; Violet Hannah Mocatta (1902-1990) - at school ans Alan Abraham Mocatta (1907-1990), together with a governess, a nurse, a cook, a parlourmaid, a housemaid, an under housemaid and a kitchen maid.

His wife died on 10 June 1915 and when he was granted probate on 4 August 1915 her effects totalled £12,477-13s-11d.

He completed his 1921 census return form on 19 June 1921 and claimed to be aged 57 years, 3 months, a widowed stock jobber and a stock exchange employer working at 5 Drapers' Gardens, still living at 93 Westbourne Terrace, Paddington, which he described as an 18 roomed property, with two of his daughters: Gladys Elkah Mocatta - in whole-time physics education and Violet Hannah Mocatta - in whole-time social science education, together with a housekeeper, a cook, a parlourmaid, two housemaids and a kitchen maid.

Electoral registers from 1928 show him listed at 122 Gloucester Terrace, London, W2.

His death, aged 68 years, was registered in the 1st quarter of 1934 in the Paddington Registration District, London. Probate records confirmed his address as 122 Gloucester Terrace and that he died on 16 February 1934. Probate was granted on 19 April 1934 jointly to his son Alan Abraham Macotta, who was a barrister, Geoffrey Harris Whitehill - a stockbroker's clerk, Abraham Sigismund Diamond - a barrister and Frank Bunting - a stock jobber. His effects totalled £26,262-6s-3d. At the same time these four executors were also regranted administration of Flora Mocatta's estate and her effects now totalled just £397-10s-0d.

His body was buried in the in the Golders Green Jewish Cemetery, Hoop Lane, London, NW11 7NL. 

He is shown as 'EDWARD LUMBROZO MOCATTA ESQRE.' on the foundation stone of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews Hospital, Albert Sterne House, 253 Mile End Road, London, E1.
