Edward Pinhey was born on 28 February 1855 in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, the second of the eleven children of Robert Hill Pinhey (1831-1896) and Mary Ann Pinhey née Pellew (1828-1910). His baptism was solemnized at Tannah under the Presidency of Bombay, East India, on 10 March 1855, where the baptismal records confirm his date of birth, that his family lived in Tannah and that his father was employed in the Bombay civil service.

His ten siblings were: Robert William Spottiswoode Pinhey (1853-1890); Emily Pinhey (1857-1950); Hugh Theodore Pinhey (1858-1953); Norman Louis Pinhey (1860-1860); Alexander Fleetwood Pinhey (1861-1916); Arthur Francis Pinhey (1863-1952); Mary Georgina Pinhey (1868-1961); Winthrop Molyneux Pinhey (1870-1894); Henry Pellew Douglas Pinhey (1872-1954) and Charles Codrington Pinhey (1874-1952).

He was shown in the census that was undertaken on 7 April 1861 as aged 6 years and a scholar at Finchley College. He was living in Bridge House, Chilton Foliat, Hungerford, Wiltshire, with his widowed paternal grandmother, Emily Barclay Pinhey née Spottiswoode (1812-1901), his paternal uncle Arthur Maurice Pinhey (1845-1905) and three siblings: Robert William Spottiswoode Pinhey - also a scholar at Finchley College; Emily Pinhey and Hugh Theodore Pinhey, together with a groom, a cook, nurse and a housemaid.

He was described as aged 16 years and a scholar at Wellington College, Sandhurst, Berkshire on the census that was compiled on 2 April 1871.

He went on to study at Royal Indian Engineering College at Cooper's Hill, Egham, Surrey, being admitted as a student on 27 April 1875. He joined the Bombay Public Works Department in India on 1 October 1876 as an assistant engineer, becoming an executive engineer in October 1886 and retired in March 1904.

On 13 July 1886 he married Juliet Mary Morris née Roulatt (1849-1936) in Christ Church, Lancaster Gate, Paddington, Middlesex (now Greater London), where in the marriage register he is shown as aged 31 years, a bachelor and a civil engineer living at 68 Queens Gardens, Paddington, the son of Robert Hill Pinhey, a retired judge, whilst his wife was described as aged 37 years and a widow, residing at 146 Inverness Terrace, Paddington, the daughter of John Charles Roulatt, a clergyman.

On 1 May 1887 in Bombay, India, his wife gave birth to twins. One was stillborn and was not given a name, but the other was Violet Mary Pinhey (1887-1952). Their other child was Phyllis Juliet Pellew Pinhey (1894-1982) who was born on 15 May 1894 in the Paddington Registration District and when she was baptised on 13 July 1894 in Christ Church, Paddington, the baptismal register show that he and his family were living at 94 Talbot Road, Paddington. Electoral registers in 1894 show that he was renting six rooms on the 2nd & 3rd floors at 94 Talbot Road, from a James Graham at the same address.

Electoral registers and Post Office Home Counties Directories show him listed between 1905 and 1908 at North Lodge, The Green, Ealing, Middlesex (now Greater London) but from 1910 to 1914 he was shown at 22 Woodville Road, Ealing.

When he completed his census return form on 2 April 1911 he described himself as aged 56 years and a pensioner of the Indian Public Works Department. He was living in a ten roomed property at , Ealing, with his wife and their daughter Violet Mary Pinhey.

Electoral registers and Post Office Home Counties Directories from 1915 show him listed at 18 Madeley Road, Ealing.

His death was registered as aged 79 years in the 1st quarter of 1934 in the Brentford Registration District, Middlesex (now Greater London). His obituary in a local newspaper stated that:- He died at his home, 18 Madeley Road, Ealing, on 14 March 1934, He was a retired civil engineer who died suddenly following an attack of pneumonia. Educated at Wellington and Cooper's Hill Engineering College. Between 1909 and 1921 he was a church warden at St Saviour's Church. During the war he was a special constable and had served for 25 years in India.

His body was buried in Plot 16, Grave 11856, in the Westminster Cemetery, 38 Uxbridge Road, London, W7 3PP. Probate was granted on 16 April 1934, jointly to his daughter Violet Mary Pinhey, who was a spinster and his brother The Reverend Henry Pellew Douglas Pinhey. His effects totalled £5,177-0s-7d.

He is shown as 'E•PINHEY' on the foundation stone at St Saviour's Church House, The Grove, London, W5.
