Emma Bowden

Searching The London Gazette for "Emma Bowden" throws up two entries: 29 April and 27 May 1864. Both are very similar and begin:

"Emma Bowden, late of the Lamb and Flag Public-house, Rose-street, . . . Licensed Victualler, and now of No. 8, Orchard-street, Kentish Town, . . . Out of business, Married Woman, presenting her Petition as a Feme sole,...."

We interpret legalise that follows to say that Emma was divorced on 26 April 1864, and declared bankrupt the following day, and there are some other scheduled events over the next few months related to her bankruptcy.

Doesn't sound like 1864 was a good year for Emma, does it?

An example of WW2 brick graffiti.
