Had served in the Grenadier Guards. At the time of his death worked at Chelsea Hospital as a Captain of Invalids. His wife Jessie, two sons, Ernest and Bernard, and niece, Alice, were killed in the same bomb attack on the north east wing of the Hospital.

informs that "The in-pensioners are formed into four companies, each headed by a Captain of Invalids (an ex-Army officer responsible for the 'day to day welfare, management and administration' of the pensioners under his charge)." It's not clear whether the Captain of Invalids are themselves in-pensioners. We think not, because Ernest Ludlow had his wife and family with him, and we do know that to be accepted as an in-pensioners ex-soldiers must be free of obligations to support a spouse or family. So we think CoIs are probably ex-soldiers who are employed by the Hospital and may live on the premises, with their families.
