Eugenie Katherine Dewsnap

Eugenie Katherine Dewsnap

Councillor on the Bethnal Green Housing Committee in 1952.

Eugenie Katherine Dewsnap was born on 27 December 1904, one of at least 14 children of Thomas Henry Dewsnap (1867-1926) and Emily Martha Dewsnap née Branson (1866-1952). Her birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1905 in the Bethnal Green Registration District, London.

On the 1911 census return form completed by her father she is shown as Jenny Dewsnap, aged 6 years and living in three rooms at 44 Hereford Street, Bethnal Green, London, with her parents and the six of her surviving siblings: Thomas Henry Dewsnap (1894-1954) - a tobacco manufacturer's packer; Cecilia Dewsnap (b.1897) - an errand girl; Edgar Harold Dewsnap (1899-1940); Hilda Mary Adeline Dewsnap (1901-1977); Lilian Agnes Dewsnap (1906-1983) and Henrietta Laurentia Dewsnap (1910-2003). Her father described himself as a picture frame maker and stated that his wife had given birth to 14 children of which only 7 were still alive.

When her father completed his 1921 census return form on 19 June 1921 she was shown as Eugenie Katherine Dewsnap, aged 16 years, 5 months, a trowser (nowadays this is spelt trouser) machinist employed by Rossiter tailor and clothiers at Bethnal Green Road, Bethnal Green, living in four rooms at 11 Mape Street, Bethnal Green, London, E2, with her parents and three of her sisters: Emily Gertrude Dewsnap (1896-1954) - also a trowser machinist employed by Rossiter tailor and clothiers at Bethnal Green Road; Hilda Mary Adeline Dewsnap - another trowser machinist employed by Rossiter tailor and clothiers at Bethnal Green Road and Henrietta Laurentia Dewsnap - who was in whole time education at St Anne's Roman Catholic School, Underwood Street, Bethnal Green. Her father described himself as a picture frame joiner employed by Solomon & Company, mouldings, at Old Kent Road, London.

The 1939 England and Wales Register confirms her date of birth as 27 December 1904 and that she was still a trouser machinist living at 11 Mape Street, Bethnal Green, with two of her sisters: Emily Gertrude Dewsnap and Hilda Mary Adelaline Dewsnap who were also trouser machinists.

Royal Mail records state that she was appointed as a Temporary Postwoman Higher Grade in the London Postal Region's East Central District office and on 9 August 1950 was awarded a gratuity of £41-16s-0d.

Electoral registers until 1953 continued to show her residing at 11 Mape Street, London, E2

She married Samuel MacKenzie in the 3rd quarter of 1953 in the Westminster Registration District, London..

Her death was registered as Eugenie Katherine McKenzie, aged 78 years, in the 3rd quarter of 1983 in the Waltham Forest Registration District, Greater London and her body was buried on 26 July 1983 in the Chingford Mount Cemetery, 121 Old Church Road, London, E4 6ST.

She is shown as 'MISS E•K•DEWSNAP' on the foundation stones of both James Middleton House, Middleton Street, London, E2 and Stafford Cripps House, Globe Road, London, E2.
