Oboist and wife of Sir John Barbirolli. Born in Wallingford-on-Thames, she studied oboe under Leon Goossens, and deputised for him in the Drury Lane Orchestra. This was at a time when there were few women players in orchestras. She also played with the Scottish Orchestra, Glyndebourne Festival Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra. She married Barbirolli in 1939 and became his amanuensis and chauffeur. After his death, she started to play again and taught at the Royal Academy of Music, where she was affectionately known as 'Lady B'.
