F. Douglas Barton

Borough Engineer and Surveyor in the Borough of Hammersmith in 1948.

Our colleague Andrew Behan has researched this man: Frank Douglas Barton was born in 1888 in Stockport, Cheshire, the son of Frederick Scott Barton and Mary Jane Barton, née Heawood. His father was an Elementary School Teacher. The 1891 census shows the family living at 14 Banks Lane, Stockport and the 1901 census shows them at 22 Banks Lane, Stockport. By the time of the 1911 census the family had moved to 565 Dial Stone Lane, Stockport and he is shown as a 23 years old Surveyor for Stockport Urban District Council. In 1919 he married Doris Dooley and on 1 February 1921 their son Alec Douglas Barton was born in Stockport.

By 1922 they were living at 3 Sundew Avenue, Shepherd's Bush and the 1923 telephone directory lists him as F Douglas Barton, M.Inst.M.C.E., M.R.S.I. By 1931 they had moved to 57 Gerard Road, Barnes and, as Surveyor to the Metropolitan Borough of Hammersmith, he was responsible for the 'Hacienda Deco' style of design of Mortlake Crematorium that was opened in 1939. In 1957 he moved to Whitegates, Crowborough Road, Nutley, Uckfield, Sussex where he was to remain until he died on 29 June 1966, aged 78 years, at Roundels, Grove Hill, Hellingly, Sussex. Probate was granted to his son, who by then was a solicitor and his estate totalled £1917-0s-0d.
