Sergeant Frederick James Windram was born on 18 February 1911 in South Ealing, the youngest of three sons of William Sidwell Windram and Annie Windram née Ireland. His father was a Clerk Messenger and an Army Pensioner having served in the 5th Dragoon Guards. He was baptised on 11 March 1911 at St Mary's Parish Church, South Ealing and the family were shown as living at 24 Sunderland Road, Ealing. In April 1925 he was appointed as an Indoor Boy Messenger in London's Postal Service and in August 1929 he was promoted to the grade of Sorter in West London's Postal Service. The 1939 England and Wales register shows him still living at 24 Sunderland Road with his widowed mother and his occupation is listed as a Post Office Sorter. In mid 1940 he married Ellen Toft in North East Surrey.
He joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, service number 1287125, and was attached to No.10 Squadron, Bomber Command. He died, aged 31 years, on war service on 8 November 1942. As he has no known burial place he is commemorated on Panel 97 of the Runnymede Memorial, Coopers Hill Lane, Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey. Administration of his estate was granted to his widow who was living at 30 Shortlands Road, Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey and his effects totalled £327-6s-0d.
