Fireman Barry Charles Trussell

Died a month after attending a fire in the Intensive Care Unit of Tooting’s St Georges Hospital. He was buried following a sudden flash explosion in the storeroom, taken to the special burns unit of Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton with severe burns to his hands and face, where he died, leaving a wife, Gillian (24) and a four month old baby daughter Karen. Police suspected arson.

Our colleague, Andrew Behan, has researched this man: Barry Charles Trussell was born on 1 November 1954 a son of Samuel C Trussell and Jean Trussell, née Pilley, and grew up in the family home of 5 Mildmay, 15 Queensmere Road, Wimbledon. In 1978 he married Gillian M Usher and they had a daughter, Karen Louise Trussell. The family lived at 101 Elmstead Gardens, Worcester Park, Surrey. He died, aged 26 years, on 21 May 1981.
