Our colleague, Andrew Behan, expands upon this. Charles George Gadd was born on 14 September 1921, a son of Thomas Gadd (b.1877) and Annie Elizabeth Gadd née Barber (1880-1977). His birth was registered in the 4th quarter of 1921 in the Greenwich Registration District, London. On 28 September 1921 he was baptised at St Paul's Church, Deptford High Street, London, SE8, where the baptismal register confirms his date of birth, that his family lived at 107 Church Street, Deptford, and that his father was a labourer.
He married Roseanna Lilian Banks (1919-1991) in the 2nd quarter of 1945 in the Fulham Registration District, London.
He was serving as a Fireman in the London Fire Brigade and was attached to Clerkenwell Fire Station when he was fatally injured on 11 May 1954, at a fire in warehouse at Langley Street, Covent Garden, London.
His death, aged 32 years, was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1954 in the Westminster Registration District, London. Probate records confirm that his address had been Flat 8, Fire Station, 140 Tabernacle Street, London, EC2 and that he died on 23 May 1954 at Charing Cross Hospital, London, WC2. Administration of his estate was granted on 24 June 1954 to his widow and his effects totalled £386-10s-0d.
He is shown as 'Fm. Charles George Gadd' on the memorial plaque at the London Fire Brigade Memorial in Highgate Cemetery, Swain's Lane, London, N6 and as 'Charles Gadd' on the Red Plaque in Langley Street, Covent Garden, London. He is also commemorated on the , on the and on the National Firefighters Memorial in Sermon Lane, London, EC3.
