Flying Officer Fred Elbert Almos was born on 29 November 1921 in , Los Angeles, California, USA, the son of Peter Almos (1892-1970) and Grace Almos née Knight (1896-1987).
United States Federal Censuses show that from 1930 to 1940 he was living in , Santa Clara, California. He undertook service pilot training in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA in 1940 and later that year he joined the in Canada coming to England where he landed in Liverpool, Lancashire. In 1941 he was assigned to . On 20 April 1942 he flew one of the 47 Spitfires from the aircraft carrier to Malta where he was assigned to and took part in the .
Married to Ruth Kathryn Valencia (1923-1999), their son Edward Leon Almos was born on 3 December 1945 in , California. He and his wife divorced in July 1967 and he went to live in . He died, aged 76 years, on 23 December 1997.
