Private George Thomas Yeates was born in 1910 in Cardiff, Wales, a son of Edward Yeates and Elizabeth Ann Yeates. His father was a General Labourer. The 1911 census shows him as a 9 months old baby living with his parents and an elder sister and brother at 10 Cumrae Street, Moors, Cardiff, Wales. British Postal Service Appointment Books show that on 22 August 1938 he was appointed as a Postman in the London Postal Region.
He married and joined the 1st Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry, service number 2024459, and died, aged 32 years, on 5 May 1943. He was re-buried on 16 July 1943 in Grave 5.N.20. in the Massicault War Cemetery, Borj el Amri, (Massicault), Manouba, Tunisia. His wife, Violet May Yates, lived at Englishcombe Park, Somerset.
