Geoffrey Chaucer

Geoffrey Chaucer

Poet and administrator. Whilst living in the Aldgate (1374-86) as the ‘Comptroller of the Customs and Subside of Wools, Skins and Tanned Hides’ Chaucer published ‘A Monks Tale’ and worked on ‘Canterbury Tales’. Dates approximate. He left the Aldgate when he became member of parliament (or 'shire knight') for Kent.
