George Alfred Brown

Group Captain George Alfred Brown, DFC, was born 6 July 1912 in India and our Picture source gives details of his career in the Royal Air Force. This confirms that he was one of the 2,937 airmen who participated in the Battle of Britain and that he is also commemorated on the Battle of Britain London Monument, Victoria Embankment, Westminster.

He married Evelyn M. Spickett (b.1920), their marriage being recorded in the 3rd quarter of 1940 in the Cambridge registration district.

He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in December 1941 and the citation read 'Sq. Ldr. Brown has been actively engaged in Fighter Command since the beginning of hostilities and has shown the highest devotion to duty over a long period. Within the past six months he has partaken in nine sorties over occupied France as close escort to bombers, and has proved himself an able leader and an inspiration to his subordinates. He has destroyed one enemy aircraft. In addition he has taken part in the training of all three Eagle Squadrons and has assisted in bringing them to a high state of operational efficiency'.

He died, aged 85 years, his death being registered in February 1988 in the Chichester, Sussex, registration district.
