Awarded the VC for his heroism on 23 February 1917, age 36, while serving in the 9th Gurkha Rifles, Indian Army. "He crossed a river with eight men, charged an enemy position, then repelled a counter-attack, in spite of wounds they held the position displaying a boldness, determination and great bravery.
