George Ernest Gardner was born on 1 May 1880, his birth being registered in the 2nd quarter of 1880 in the Aston Registration District, Warwickshire.
Electoral registers from 1933 list him at 20 Ducal Street, Bethnal Green, London and the England and Wales Register that was compiled on 29 September 1939 confirmed his date of birth as 1 May 1880 and described him as an incapacitated widower who was still living at 20 Ducal Street, Bethnal Green.
He was killed by a German bomb that fell on the Columbia Market air raid shelter on the night of 7th/8th September 1940. His death was registered, as aged 60 years, in the 3rd quarter of 1940 in the Bethnal Green Registration District, London and his on 14 September 1940 in .
He is shown as 'GARDNER George 60' on the Columbia Market air raid shelter memorial in the Rose Garden, Old Market Square, Ravenscroft Park, London, E2.
He is also commemorated on the , on the and in that is kept just outside the entrance to St George's Chapel at the west end of Westminster Abbey.
