George William Martindale was born in 1921, the youngest of the three children of Henry George Martindale (1894-1970) and Annie Martindale née Batten (1895-1931). His birth was registered in the 4th quarter of 1921 in the Holborn registration district. His elder siblings were Henry George Martindale (1915-1976) and Annie Rosetta Martindale (1918-2001).
In 1935 his parents are shown on the electoral register as residing at 4 Trinity Place, Hoxton.
He served in the 8th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment), service number 5781140, rising to the rank of Corporal when he died, aged 21 years, on 31 August 1943. He was buried in Plot 7, Row C, Grave 17 in the Tripoli War Cemetery, Tripolitania (now Libya).
