George Whiffen

War dead, WW1 i

Commemorated on a memorial as having died in WW1.

George Whiffen

gives this information: "Rifleman 5117 GEORGE WHIFFEN of ‘D’ Company, 3/21st battalion London Regiment died of pleurisy and pneumonia on 12 May 1916, aged 40 in Winchester, where the battalion was based at the time. He is buried in Ladywell cemetery. He had previously served with the Royal Garrison Artillery. Location of Memorial: He is remembered on the Lewisham Military Hospital memorial outside University Hospital Lewisham and on the now lost Lewisham Board of Guardians Memorial Board. Details: When he enlisted on 16 November 1915 at the age of 39 he gave his address as 6 Engleheart Road, Catford and his occupation as night porter at Lewisham Hospital."

The inscription at Lewisham Hospital describes him as one of the three 'officers of this institution’ and it seems likely that he was employed by the Lewisham Infirmary before it became a military hospital in 1915.
