During the interregnum the Puritans had become powerful within the Church of England. On the restoration of King Charles II there was a move to also restore the Anglican church. The 1662 Act of Uniformity required ministers to take an oath of conformity, which several thousand puritan ministers refused to do and so they were ejected from the Church of England. This event is seen as the start of the Non-Conformist concept.
