Gunner Francis John Tugwell

Francis John Tugwell was born in 1925, the eldest of the five children of Francis William Tugwell (1901-1995) and Stella Lillian Tugwell née Vincent (1901-1975). His birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1925 in the Willesden Registration District, Middlesex (now Greater London). His father was a porter working at Liverpool Street station for the Metropolitan Railway Company.

His four siblings were: Joan Tugwell (1928-2012); David George Tugwell (1929-2007); Peter Tugwell (1933-1956) and Sheila Mary Tugwell (1940-1991).

Electoral registers in 1929 and 1930 show his parents listed at 30 Charlton Road, Harlesden, Middlesex (now Greater London) and from 1935 to 1937 at 42 Dagmar Avenue, Wembley, Middlesex (now Greater London). The registers in 1938 show them at 93 Sutton Court Road, Hillingdon, Middlesex (now Greater London) and from 1939 at 60 Sedgewick Avenue, Hillingdon.

In December 1941 he was appointed as a postman in London's Western District Office. He joined the Royal Artillery, service number 14551978 and whilst attached their 15th Field Regiment died, aged 19 years, on 1 September 1944. His body was initially buried near where he fell, but on 14 May 1945 was exhumed and , at the Gradara War Cemetery, Via Pesaro s.n, 61012 Gradara (PU) Marche, Italy.

He is shown as 'TUGWELL  F.J.' on the Western Postal District war memorial in Mount Pleasant, London, WC1. He is also commemorated on the and on .
