Haydn Wood

Violinist and composer of light music. Born Yorkshire into a musical family, his name is pronounced to rhyme with maiden. Brought up on the Isle of Man.

WW1 and the new radio broadcasting meant there was a ready audience for his tunes, the best known being 'Roses of Picardy'. His suite 'London Landmarks' (1946) included the march 'The Horse-Guards, Whitehall' which was the signature tune for the long-running radio show 'Down Your Way'. Died at the nursing home, The Priory, Roehampton.
