Heath & (Old) Hampstead Society / Hampstead Plaque Fund

The Hampstead Plaque fund was set up, many years ago, by Ralph Wade and has been administered by the Society ever since.

The origins of the Heath & (Old) Hampstead Society are given at the . Briefly: (1800–69), 8th Baronet of Eastbourne and Charlton was also lord of the manor of Hampstead and wanted to develop the area with housing.  The locals were outraged and by 1866 had set up a Hampstead Heath Protection Fund Committee, forerunner of today's Society. The campaign only ended with the death of Sir Thomas.

When the LCC started to "parkify" the heath the locals again fought back and in April 1897 the old Hampstead Heath Protection Fund Committee was resurrected as the Hampstead Heath Protection Society, the first Civic Society in London. The first chairman was Mr. Lake, and the first secretary, Miss Field.

It's likely that Miss Field was related to Walter Field (1837-1901), who has as "the main founder of the Hampstead Heath Protection Society".
