Henry, Earl of Romney

Henry, Earl of Romney

Politician and army officer. Born Henry Sidney (or Sydney) in Paris. Entered parliament in 1679 and was one of the group known as 'The Immortal Seven', who invited William of Orange to take the throne after King James II was deposed. Fought at the Battle of the Boyne and became envoy to the Hague. He fell from favour with the accession of Queen Anne and died from smallpox, on his birthday, at his home, 16 St James's Square.
