Herbert Columbine, VC

Born Herbert George Columbine. He was a private in the 9th Squadron machine gun corps. On the 22nd March 1918 at Hervilly Wood, France he took over command of a Vickers gun and fired it at the enemy for four hours. Eventually, a low-flying aircraft managed to gain access to his trench and he was killed by a bomb. For his deeds he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
