Herbert Jones, VC

Soldier, known as H. Jones, born in Putney. He joined the army on leaving school, and in July 1960 he was commissioned into the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment as a second lieutenant. Subsequently he was promoted to lieutenant, captain and major, serving in Northern Ireland.

At the outbreak of the Falklands war he was attached alongside 3 PARA to reinforce 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines. During the battle of Goose Green his unit was pinned down by heavy fire. He led a charge against the nearest position, in which he was killed. The Argentinian unit surrendered shortly afterwards.

For his actions, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
