Herbert Schmalz

Herbert Gustave Schmalz was a painter, mainly religious subjects in a Pre-Raphaelite style. His father was a merchant, and later Prussian consul in Newcastle, where Schmalz was born. His maternal grandfather was the painter James Wilson Carmichael.

At the end of WW1 he dropped the Schmalz and adopted his mother's maiden name, Carmichael. Died London.

Friends with William Holman Hunt, Val Prinsep and Frederic Leighton, all near neighbours.
