Strebe vorwaerts
Close examination shows that the child is holding a painter's palette which bears the "H. S." and a painter's mahl stick (used to support the hand holding the brush).
We are indebted to our language consultant David Hopkins who managed to read the German lettering correctly and thus gave the translation "strive forward". He also found a inscribed with (translated) "Jubilee Medal, 1865 - 1890, strive forward", G.H. (or H. G)." This may refer to the which was an agreement between Prussia and Austria, over the governing of Schleswig, Holstein and Saxe-Lauenburg. However, it seems unlikely that Schmalz intended to reference this treaty on the wall of his studio, so perhaps "strive forward" was just a popular Prussian slogan at the time.

W14, Addison Road, 49
Our eye was caught by this ornate pediment. The explains: "The artists’ studio to the rear of this house sits on Napier Road and was built for painter, Herbert Schmalz. It is a very charming building in stock brick with a large north window in Tudor style and stone surround with a cherub holding a fan {sic} with the initials H.S. and the date 1894 in the curved pediment."
gives the date of the construction of the house at number 49 as 1856–7 and the builders as Nicholson and Son, of Wandsworth.
The house was redeveloped and the studio added in 1893, the architect being John William Simpson.
