Hindle House Community / Hindle House War Memorial Project

Our plan shows the Hindle House estate with the central Community Centre surrounded by the residential blocks, shaded yellow. 197 flats built in 1938-9 as council flats. A WW2 bomb fell on 18 September 1940, on the north-west corner killing 7 people, but the damage to the building was repaired.

Shortly after WW2 Harriet Longman (mother of Reginald Longman), Mrs Flood and Alice Monk (Edith Appleby's daughter) were the ladies responsible for organising the collection and having the plaque made and installed.

And then in 2014-15 after a lot of research and fund raising, Brian and Natalie Longman, with lots of support from others, set up the Hindle House War Memorial Project, got the original plaque restored and re-erected and also created a new plaque for the Blitz bomb. And in 2017 they launched the website . This contains information about many of those named on the plaques, and more is being added all the time. It is very valuable for anyone researching these events.
