Hubert Bland

Hubert Bland

Journalist and socialist. Born at 22 Wood Street, Woolwich. He married the author Edith Nesbit in 1880. Although she was pregnant, he divided his time between her and his widowed mother and her paid companion (with whom he was having an affair). Another affair produced two children, which Edith brought up as her own. In 1883, he and Edith joined a socialist debating group which evolved to become the Fabian Society. As a journalist he contributed to the London Weekly Dispatch and the Manchester Sunday Chronicle. Died at Well Hall, Eltham
