Hugh George Charles Murray

Hugh George Charles Murray was born on 17 March 1920, the second of the four children of Hugh Murray (1882-1962) and Caroline Murray née Tyler (1889-1940). His birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1920 in the Whitechapel Registration District, London.

He was shown on the census return form completed by his father on 19 June 1921 as aged 1 year, 3 months and living in two rooms at 252 Guinness Trust Buildings, Columbia Road, Hackney, London, with his parents and his sister Caroline Mary Ann Maud Murray (1911-1978). His father was shown as a furniture packer employed by Breckman & Co., cabinet makers, at Curtain Road, Shoreditch, London.

When the England and Wales Register was compiled on 29 September 1939 it confirmed his date of birth and showed that he was a waiter in a canteen. He was living at 10a Derbyshire Street, Bethnal Green, with his father, who was listed an export packer furniture, his mother who was a cleaner at a canteen and two of his sisters: Rose Lillian Gladys Murray (1922-1984) - a flour packer and Ivy May Mildred Murray (1927-1940) who was shown as at school. The family later moved to 85 Satchwell Road, Bethnal Green.

He, together with his mother and one of his sisters, Ivy May Mildred Murray, were killed when a German bomb was dropped on the Columbia Market air raid shelter on the night of 7th/8th September 1940. His death was registered, aged 20 years, in the 3rd quarter of 1940 in the Bethnal Green Registration District, London and his  on 17 September 1940 in the , Sebert Road, London, E7 0NP.

He is shown as 'MURRAY Hugh 20' on the Columbia Market air raid shelter memorial in the Rose Garden, Old Market Square, Ravenscroft Park, London, E2.

He is also commemorated on the , on the  and in  that is kept just outside the entrance to St George's Chapel at the west end of Westminster Abbey.
