Jean Sibelius

Composer. Born Johan Julius Christian Sibelius in Hämeenlinna in the Grand Duchy of Finland, (an autonomous part of the Russian Empire). His compositions include Finlandia, The Karelia Suite and The Swan of Tuonela. At the time of his death, in the house in Finland he had lived in since 1904, his fifth symphony was being broadcast from Helsinki. He was honoured with a state funeral.
